"Mars" Mid-Century Quartersawn White Oak Dining Table

“Mars” is now even more out of this world. This is a new and improved version of “Mars”, but in quartersawn white oak. At first glance you cannot help but notice the wood figuring of the quartersawn white oak - the medullary rays are quite striking and really sets this piece apart from any other table like it. I could just stare at it for hours.

Also different from the original you will see some geometric sculpting done to the blocks joining the sets of legs, which ease into the new geometrically sculpted stretcher. This part of the table needed beefed up for functional purposes, and I decided to have some fun with that. The intention was to soften and draw more attention to the underside of the table too.

By design I wanted an ultra-thin look to the table top, I added a shallow chamfer along the outside edges of the underside. Often referred to as a “saarinen edge” this gave us a 1/2” thick look, with the stability of a 1-1/2” thick table. This is a thinner looking profile than the original too.

The table was not set in these photos, but you could easily squeeze in up eight guests using the ends.

Each piece is finished with a protective oil and hardwax blend for a beautiful and warm matte finish. Finish will not water-spot.
