"Lagoon" Cherry Dining Table
(SOLD)
-----
Yes, all of my tables are special to me in their own way, but this one hits home. I made this for my cousin Ellen. Her father, Dan Brodrick, is a luthier in La Crosse, WI (recently retired) that made and repaired classical instruments. I believe he made nearly 90 violins in his day.
Naturally as I started woodworking more and more, word spread to my Uncle Dan that I was woodworking full-time. Upon his retiring he let me know that he had quite a few wood scraps laying around his shop and thought I should have them. Months later, when Ellen asked me the to make her a table, it was an obvious choice to somehow incorporate some of the scrap from his shop into her table. On one end is a decorative ebony bowtie inlay. First time using ebony!
Another design element worth noting is the live edge on this piece and “Old Fashioned.” I used to sand my live edges down which removes all of the inner bark layer and its’ coloring, but lately I have been trying to preserve that extremely thin, natural layer. I think the tedious preservation of that inner layer is worth every minute and makes for a much more beautiful contrast between the live edge and the surface of the table. What do you think?
I was honored to be able to make this table and (hopefully) see it used by that side of my family for the decades to come.
The table was not set for guests, but you could comfortably seat eight and squeeze in up to ten using the ends.
Each piece is finished with a protective oil and hardwax blend for a beautiful and warm matte finish. Finish will not water-spot.
